You have been traveling and enjoying the benefits of TSA Pre-Check: shorter lines, not needing to take off your jacket, shoes, belt, etc., and during this time your name changes! Because the new name is not registered with TSA, you will not be able to use the TSA Pre-Check line. In order to be TSA Pre-Checked, your name (and birthday) need to match in three documents: 1) ticket/boarding pass 2) Government issued ID and 3) (although this is not a document) the name associated with your KTN (Known Traveler Number). So what to do now?
The good news is that you are able to update your name with TSA without applying for a new KTN (and incurring additional expenses); the not-so-good news is that it will take about 3 months for this process to take place. There is no way to expedite this process since, as far as I can tell, it is not possible to talk to an individual face to face (besides the initial request). At some point during this time, TSA will request a copy of the Government issued ID with the new name. For up-to-date information on what is needed, check the TSA website.
The first step is to contact TSA, via phone or email, and start the process. If you call, the agent will take the pertinent information (make sure to provide a valid email since future contacts will be via email); no documentation is required at this time. At the end of the interview, the agent will indicate that someone will contact you within 3 months. There will be no contact before then (yes, the lack of feedback can be unnerving). If you call back during this period, the agent will indicate that someone will contact you within 3 months from the time the request was submitted with no additional details.
At some point during this period, TSA will contact you via email requesting the necessary documentation to verify and update the new name – see sample email below.
