The solar eclipse is coming and you forgot to order a solar filter for your camera. No worries, this is a quick way to create a filter for your SLR camera lens using a welding filter. Using the welding filter will create pictures with a green hue (due to the coating on the filter). If you wish, there are many photo editing tools (such as Adobe Photoshop) that can remove the green hue from your pictures.
For this exercise you are going to need the following items:
- Museum Wax
- Welding Goggles #14 or higher is recommended for the best protection. I purchased a set of #10 at Harbor Freight Tools and had good results. This filter will fit a 55 Diameter or smaller.
- Utility Knife
First, remove the welding filter from the mask.

Use the utility knife to cut the filter through the middle of the filter.

Apply the museum wax around the lens and attach the filter to the lens.

You are ready to start taking pictures. In order to prevent the sun’s heat from melting the wax place the camera in the shade when not taking the picture in order for the wax not to soften.

Here are the final results:

DISCLAIMER: Nothing substitutes the right tool for the right job; in this case a filter for your lens. If you expose your lens for long periods of time to the sun it may damage the sensor. Also, make sure that you are using your solar eclipse glasses to prevent watching the sun accidentally with the naked eye.
