Have you ever found yourself in this situation while driving a rental, borrowed, or recently purchased a car, you pull into a gas station and don’t know what side of the car the gas tank door is located on.  To make matters worse, the hose from the gas pump (with exception of Costco Gas Stations) doesn’t reach the far side of the car, so you need to make sure that the side of the car has the gas tank door next to the gas pump.  So what options do you have besides getting out of the car and walking around it?  Not fun especially on a rainy or snowy day.

Cars manufactured prior to the 1990s had the gas tank door (filter) located in the rear of the car (hidden behind a door holding the license place or a cap), so it didn’t matter what side of the gas pump you pulled into.  After regulations were lifted manufacturers started to place the gas tank door on either side of the car.  To eliminate the guessing game, car manufacturers introduced a door indicator located around the fuel gauge.

Have you always wondered what the arrow next to the gas pump icon is for?  Well, that arrow points to the side of the car where the door for the gas tank is located!  The images below indicate that the gas tank door is located at the driver’s side (left) of the car.

An interesting fact, according to AAA, about one in ten drivers know about the gas tank indicator.  So, let’s increase those odds!!
